Topic #1 – Music

Following are some sample answers that could be given in IELTS Speaking Part 1 2024 topic Music :

1) What types of music do you like to listen to?

I usually listen to Indian Hindi music. I’m very fond of Arijit Singh and Mohit Chauhan. I also frequently listen to some American pop songs. I’m fond of two bands called West Life and the Backstreet Boys.

2) At what times of day do you like to listen to music?

Usually I put my earphones in when I go to work in the morning. I take the bus every single day. I prefer listening to my own music rather than boring bus radio.

3) Do you prefer to listen to recordings or live performances?

I guess I don’t really have a preference here. It depends on who is playing the music. Usually
recordings are much clearer, the voices are better, and if the song is in familiar language, it get easier for me to understand the lyrics.

4) What types of music are popular in your country?

Well, Indian party music is huge here. This is the type of music you can hear if you go to
some wedding or a party. In addition, there are quite a few rock bands in my country, and they are very trendy (=popular).

5) Do you think children should learn to play a musical instrument?

I think it’s great if parents can give their children an opportunity to learn how to play at least one instrument, but the caveat here is, very often, kids don’t enjoy it, but they keep on learning because their parents expect them to learn.

Topic #2 – Shopping

Following are some sample answers that could be given in IELTS Speaking Part 1 2024 topic Shopping:

6) Do you enjoy shopping?

Yes, I looove shopping! I frequently go to shopping with my mother or some friends. There are many new shopping malls with a lot of new shops, grocery stores, and hair salons in Calgary. It’s always exciting to go there and get my favourite haircut.

7) Do you prefer shopping in modern stores or in traditional markets?

I definitely prefer to go to the modern departmental stores, because I know I can find
whatever I want there. The shops offer a great variety of branded products. Usually the traditional markets in my hometown only sell cheap products or counterfeit items.

8) What sorts of things do you enjoy buying most?

I like to buy books. I am a bibliophile, so I read a lot, and I enjoy seeing all the books on the shelves in my house. Books are great; they allow me to develop perspective on things, and they open the doors to an imaginary world.

9) How often do you go shopping for things apart from food?

Rarely. I am a workaholic human being, so I always have too many plates spinning at one time. So my Mom and Dad buys most of the stuff non-related to food.

Topic #3 – Reading

Following are some sample answers that could be given in IELTS Speaking Part 1 2024 topic Reading :

10) What kinds of things do you read?

I read a lot of textbooks at home whenever I get time. I major in History, so most books I read are related to this subject. However, in my spare time, I enjoy learning full forms. As a child, I really liked learning abbreviations.

11) How much time do you spend reading?

Not much. I am very busy with my job, and I don’t get many chances to sit down and read anything other than the newspaper. When I get home, I usually have dinner with my family; we talk, we relax a bit, and then there is a little time left to immerse in book reading.

12) At what time of day do you prefer to read?

Definitely at night, just before turning the lights off and sleeping. I usually read in bed. It could be a textbook if I have an exam or interview coming up or a novel if I have time. It’s a habit I have gotten used to since I was a child.

Topic #4 – Writing

Following are some sample answers that could be given in IELTS Speaking Part 1 2024 topic Writing :

13) What kinds of writing do you generally do?

I am not a student anymore so I don’t write as often as I used to. But I still take notes at work whenever we have a meeting or I think of something important to do. I frequently make
lists of things I shouldn’t forget. I often write emails to customers and colleagues.

14) How often do you write formal letters?

I hardly ever write formal letters to anyone. I use my mobile phone a lot, and I call my relatives or my family to keep in touch with them, or send them good wishes. I used to write New Year cards every Spring Festival, but I don’t do anymore; I simply call or visit them.

15) Which language do you prefer to write in?

Naturally my native language, Punjabi. But for office correspondence I usually write in English as it’s a commonly used language.

Topic #5 – Newspapers

Following are some sample answers that could be given in IELTS Speaking Part 1 2024 topic Newspapers :

16) How often do you read the newspaper?

Very frequently. I get the newspaper at work, so I read it on almost a daily basis. On the weekends however, I usually read the news online. I browse Google News, which is very convenient.

17) Which newspapers do you read?

Most of the time, I read The Hindu. It’s the most
popular newspaper in my country. It offers interesting news about our city and state,
as well as explicit and informative articles on current events both in India and across the
world.

18) How important are newspapers in your country?

I think newspapers are extremely important in India. As Indian landscape is so huge, it’s
quintessential for people to find out about what is going on all around the country. I think that
newspapers somehow keep the country united.

Topic #6 – Television & Films

Following are some sample answers that could be given in IELTS Speaking Part 1 2024 topic Television and Films :

19) How often do you watch TV?

Pretty much every day. I turn the TV on in the morning when I get ready for work, and also at night after dinner, when I have time to relax. I like to watch the news, and sometimes I rent a DVD.

20) What kind of programs do you watch?

I enjoy watching movies, especially historical films. But I must admit I often binge-watch them on Netflix and connect my TV with the internet. Watching a movie on a TV channel is annoying because they play commercials every 15 minutes or so.

21) Is watching TV a popular thing to do in your country?

It is popular with a lot of middle-aged people like my parents, for example, who always turn on the TV as soon as they get home. They like to have some kind of reverberation in the house. I don’t know why. I guess it’s a habit, or it makes them feel like they’re not alone maybe.

22) How often do you watch films?

Frequently. I really enjoy watching films, more specifically fantasy movies like Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. I like it when there is a good plot, with stunning special effects.

23) How often do you go to the cinema?

Not that often (=not so often). First of all, I don’t have that much time(=so much time) because of my work, and my office is far away from the city centre. Going to the cinema is a
bit troublesome because there are not much transport options available late at night.

Topic #7 – Computers

Following are some sample answers that could be given in IELTS Speaking Part 1 2024 topic Music :

24) How often do you use a computer?

Pretty much every day(=almost every day). I have a Macbook at home, and I use it to chat with my friends on Instant Messenger; I read the news, and watch online movies. In addition, I am running websites to help people prepare for their exams.

25) Which websites do you often visit on the Internet?

I Google things on daily basis, and I frequently read the news on Yahoo News. These are two of the most popular websites in my country. I browse Global news to access current events happening in Canada or elsewhere. Their website is aesthetically designed and the articles are well-written.

26) In what ways do young people use computers in your country?

Well, most students use the Internet in order to do a bit of research for their studies. They look for articles and info related to their course work. On the other hand, I think that most teenagers and young adults are addicted to Instant Messenger apps like Facebook and Twitter. They are constantly online, chatting with their friends or even strangers.

Topic #8 – Snacks

What snacks do you like to eat?

I adore munching on both salty and sweet goodies. The Lays Masala Magic chips are my favourite. To be honest, I believe I eat too much of them.

Did you often eat snacks when you were young?

No, when I was younger, my parents were really rigorous about not letting me have snacks. They saw to it that I only consumed wholesome, home-cooked food.

When do you usually eat snacks now?

I typically have tea and snacks in the evening. We all gather as a family to have tea and snacks at this time. When I watch movies at night after dinner, I also consume snacks.

Do you think it is healthy for you to eat snacks?

No, eating too many snacks is not particularly healthy. The issue with snacks is that they are so good that we often eat too much of them. I now consume baked chips to get away from this.

Topic #9 – Weather

What’s the weather like where you live?

I’m from Haryana. With the exception of the monsoon season, when it rains heavily and the temperature turns hot and muggy, it is similar to a semi-arid region and is generally hot and dry.

Do you prefer cold or hot weather?

I like the cold because I believe it makes me more productive at work. I have a drowsy, lethargic feeling when it’s hot outside.

Do you prefer dry or wet weather?

I cherish the rain. Maybe it’s because I live in an arid area with very little rainfall.

Are you in the habit of checking the weather forecast? When/How often?

With the exception of during the monsoons, I rarely check the weather forecast. When it rains during the monsoon season, it can happen at any time, so I always check the weather prediction before I leave the house and bring an umbrella with me.

What do you think are the effects of climate change in recent years?

I consider there to have been numerous changes. The season change has, however, been the biggest. The summers are now longer and much hotter. Halloween, a celebration we observe in October or November, used to be cold, but nowadays it’s warm.

Would you like to visit other cities that have different climates from where you live?

Yes, I appreciate travelling to cities with chilly temperatures because Haryana experiences a lot of heat and doesn’t have the opportunity to enjoy a cold climate. I adore visiting hill stations because of this. I also frequently visit coastal cities since I like the beaches there.
